The genre evolves from being music for worship into music as art that is performed by both gospel and nongospel artists and, most important, appreciated by non-church-going individuals. 1968 James Cleveland organizes the Gospel Music Workshop of America to train and introduce people to the gospel tradition. 1968 Aretha Franklin, the ‘‘Queen of Soul,’’ sings the national anthem at the Democratic National Convention. In this same year, she is featured in a Time magazine cover story, ‘‘Lady Soul: Singing It Like It Is,’’ firmly establishing the national profile of soul music.
